MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) - The number of people injured by firecrackers during the New Year celebrations in Metro Manila has reached at least 204.

As of 8 a.m., reports indicated 24 people were hit by stray bullets, 2 were stabbed and 14 figured in other accidents.

The hospital that received the highest number of new year injury cases was the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center with 47. Most of the patients were children hurt by the banned firecracker "piccolo."

This was followed by East Avenue Center and the Mandaluyong Medical Center.

All our hospitals are ready to answer kung anuman ang mga bagay na kailangan," Health Secretary Enrique Ona said in a press conference on Saturday.

PNP chief wants total ban on firecrackers

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome, in the same press conference, reported that 45 people have been arrested so far for possession and sale of illegal firecrackers.

He said they continue to inspect shops that could be selling banned firecrackers.

Bartolome also warned those who would be using their guns on New Year's Eve.

To those who opt not to use the firecrackers they bought, Bartolome said: "Isangguni sa skilled personnel, di pwedeng basta i-expose na lang.

Meanwhile, Bartolome said he seeks a total ban on firecrackers, saying that this is the only way to prevent further injury.

- With ANC
