'INTEREST IN PACQUIAO-FLOYD SUPERFIGHT MAY END'

MANILA, Philippines – The new president of HBO Sports said that if the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight doesn’t happen soon, fans might lose their interest in the mega bout.

Ken Hershman, who took over Ross Greenburg’s place in HBO Sports, said that if the fight pushes through, it would have to take place in late 2012 or early 2013 the latest.

“I hope by the end of this year we see these guys in the ring together. If not, maybe early next year. But after that it will get less and less relevant,” Hershman said in Boxing Scene.

If it pushes through, the Pacquiao-Mayweather clash is likely to become the most lucrative fight in the history of the sport.

However, the 2 boxers have yet to reach an agreement before the fight comes into fruition.

Hershman believes that the more the 2 boxers delay their bout, the bigger the chance that the fans lose their interest in the fight.

“I do believe there is a sell-by date by which this fight will become not what it should be,” he said.

Although Hershman is willing to step in and mediate the negotiations, he said he “don’t envision that happening.”

He said it would be better for HBO to stay out of the discussion to ensure that the fight actually takes place.

This was in contrast to Greenburg’s thrust in 2010, when he acted as a mediator between the camps of Pacquiao and Mayweather.

The talks eventually broke down and reportedly caused Greenburg to resign from HBO.
