Talk ‘N Text import Omar Samhan struggled throughout the game, but that didn’t pose a big problem for the fully-loaded locals of the Tropang Texters.
Jayson Castro and Larry Fonacier combined for 40 points while three other players finished in double figures as the Tropang Texters made up for the sub-par game of their import, leading to a 110-98 triumph over the Alaska Aces on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Ranidel de Ocampo contributed 19 points and six rebounds, Jared Dillinger added 17 points and six rebounds, while Kelly Williams chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Tropang Texters, who notched their second win in as many games. They shot a steady 9-of-22 from beyond the arc with De Ocampo, Castro and Fonacier hitting one three-pointer each in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Fonacier’s last three-pointer from the corner gave Talk ‘N Text a 108-94 lead with 1:48 left, serving as the Tropang Texters’ knockout blow.
Samhan contributed six points in just 16 minutes of playing time. Worse, he is a doubtful starter for his team’s next game against B-MEG on Wednesday after hurting his knee in the fourth period.
“We sat him in the first half because of two quick fouls, then he picked up two more early in the second half and he was in and out of the game. Then, he suffered a knee injury,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes. “But I don’t think we can get somebody to come in at a short notice, so we might play with Omar.”
“But the biggest story tonight was how our second unit was able to step up despite our import’s struggle tonight,” he added.
Sonny Thoss top-scored for the Aces with 22 points, while Adam Parada, LA Tenorio, and Cyrus Baguio scored 18 points apiece.
The scores:
Talk ‘N Text (110) – Castro 20, Fonacier 20, De Ocampo 19, Dillinger 17, Williams 13, Samhan 6, Carey 5, Peek 4, Gamalinda 2, Aguilar 2, Alapag 2.
