In a battle between two low-ranked teams, Barako Bull preserved its energy down the stretch to outlast Meralco, 89-82, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao del Norte on Saturday.
Wynne Arboleda finished with 15 points, all coming from rainbow territory, to tow the Energy to a much-needed victory. It was the third win in seven games for Barako Bull, which is looking to extend its campaign past the elimination round. Only six teams will continue on to the next phase of the tourney.
The loss dropped Meralco to ninth spot with a win-loss 3-5 card, in peril of being eliminated early in the short tournament.
“I told the boys at the half that masyado tayong relaxed, we can’t do that against a young team like Meralco,” said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi. “But during the second half, their experience showed, they played more aggressive. Wynne hit big triples, while also made big plays. Everybody contributed to this win. I give credit to the guys, they deserve this.”
It was a hard-earned victory for the Energy, who fought back from a 15-point deficit at the half before turning back the Bolts.
Danny Seigle, back in action after missing several games due to a back injury, contributed 12 point. Barako Bull was led by Rodney White’s 18 points followed by Willie Miller’s 17.
